7/11/2021 0 Comments Exploring 80's MusicJuly is here! This month, we are staying musically fit active through listening and exploring music of the 80's! Why 80's Music? I love music from the 80s. Firstly, I am an 80's baby. I grew up watching Yo MTV Raps with Fab Five Freddie and Ed Lova, who were music curators of the time. They debuted music from folks like Salt N' Pepa and Spinderella, Tribe Called Quest, LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys. Plus, as a pastor's kid, my parents gave us great gospel/inspirational records to listen to, like BeBe and CeCe Winans, the Winans, Mattie Moss Clark and The Clark Sisters, Jennifer Holiday. This is not everything, but you can get an idea of my musical soundscape growing up, so, I share it with you who are on the path of becoming better musicians. We will study 1 song per week (4 songs total). The action, your mission: Get better musically through practicing key music concepts through listening and practice. Practicing music teaches us how to exist inside an ongoing, ever expanding journey of process. It's more than just playing an instrument, it's studying great music and applying what you've learned to understanding how it's made, so that you can be better. Daily or regular practice helps us learn, grow, and build our musical chops! When you get better, it motivates you to keep going! This month's curated activities will have music students study good music, and put into practice concepts every strong musician should have: Aural skills: Use your ears (aural) to listen to a song, dissect a few elements, and rewrite it (rhythmically and note-wise) Identifying key signatures: Listening to the first and last chord and the accompanying bass line of a song to determine the key. Is it a major key or a minor key? Chord Progressions: Being able to identify the chord pattern of the song (I, IV, V). Transposing: Changing the key of a song Form analysis: How many different sections are in the song? “Works of art make rules; rules do not make works of art.” – Claude Debussy So, studying the art helps us to define and practice the rules that make great music! What do you want to get better at musically? Fill in the blank…. I want to improve ______________. Happy Practicing!
