The Daylight in My Life

I've been surfing through YouTube a lot these past weeks. You know- searching for more musical inspiration? In particular, I came across the above Java Jazz Fest video of Erykah Badu (one of my favorite artists!).  About four years ago, she did a rendition of RAMP's song entitled Daylight. During her performance, she hooked it to her original song Love of my Life. She did it so smoothly…I was like, “man I need to perform this song at one of my next events, or just record it as a cover!”  And, guess what, I will.

Now, some of you are probably asking," who is RAMP?" I know I asked, because I didn't know. Thus, I had to look it up. The acronym is short for Roy Ayers Music Project.  Gotta love Roy Ayers! In my opinion, his music transcends time and space.  And if you think you’ve never heard his song Daylight before, you probably have heard it. It was sampled in ATCQ’s (A Tribe Called Quest’s) Bonita Applebum (RIP Phife Dog...I'm still sad about his passing). After watching Erykah’s performance a million times at work, I decided to download the original tune, and the chorus has been etched into my brain "like an ancient chant” (to coin Q-Tip’s phrase…)

I wanna see Daylight, Daylight
In my life…

Amidst the many challenges that my family has been encountering-illness, financial constraints, aging parents and grandparents, loss of friendships (due to death, getting cut out of my life by me, or cutting themselves out of my life, etc.)…I can still see the “daylight” that God has allowed to shine in my life, and I need to embrace some changes though they may hurt at times. How do I define my "daylight"?:

God’s salvation through Jesus, His wisdom, and presence constantly giving me hope for brighter days beyond this earthly life. My supportive, strong, husband, and my little girls-who are beams of joy and a source of laughter.  They are a reflection of God’s beauty. My immediate family, and the superb accomplishments and victories that we have been able to celebrate through graduations, weddings, reunions, birthdays, etc. The dreams and visions that were placed in my heart that I prayed to God about, which are coming to fruition that are a source of Divine inspiration; and the synergistic relationships that are being formed between myself and others.  I’m beginning to realize that through everything, Hope truly does spring eternal, and God’s Daylight does shine through in rainy seasons. When I focus on His Daylight, I experience a sun shower.

I was reminded of all this from listening to one song!!!! Messages in some songs are very powerful and positive depending on what you’re facing in life. But I’m not saying anything profound-you know this.  What I want to know is what song reminds you of the daylight in your life? Go ahead and comment below.
