The Daylight in My Life

I've been surfing through YouTube a lot these past weeks. You know- searching for more musical inspiration? In particular, I came across the above Java Jazz Fest video of Erykah Badu (one of my favorite artists!).  About four years ago, she did a rendition of RAMP's song entitled Daylight. During her performance, she hooked it to her original song Love of my Life. She did it so smoothly…I was like, “man I need to perform this song at one of my next events, or just record it as a cover!”  And, guess what, I will.

Now, some of you are probably asking," who is RAMP?" I know I asked, because I didn't know. Thus, I had to look it up. The acronym is short for Roy Ayers Music Project.  Gotta love Roy Ayers! In my opinion, his music transcends time and space.  And if you think you’ve never heard his song Daylight before, you probably have heard it. It was sampled in ATCQ’s (A Tribe Called Quest’s) Bonita Applebum (RIP Phife Dog...I'm still sad about his passing). After watching Erykah’s performance a million times at work, I decided to download the original tune, and the chorus has been etched into my brain "like an ancient chant” (to coin Q-Tip’s phrase…)

I wanna see Daylight, Daylight
In my life…

Amidst the many challenges that my family has been encountering-illness, financial constraints, aging parents and grandparents, loss of friendships (due to death, getting cut out of my life by me, or cutting themselves out of my life, etc.)…I can still see the “daylight” that God has allowed to shine in my life, and I need to embrace some changes though they may hurt at times. How do I define my "daylight"?:

God’s salvation through Jesus, His wisdom, and presence constantly giving me hope for brighter days beyond this earthly life. My supportive, strong, husband, and my little girls-who are beams of joy and a source of laughter.  They are a reflection of God’s beauty. My immediate family, and the superb accomplishments and victories that we have been able to celebrate through graduations, weddings, reunions, birthdays, etc. The dreams and visions that were placed in my heart that I prayed to God about, which are coming to fruition that are a source of Divine inspiration; and the synergistic relationships that are being formed between myself and others.  I’m beginning to realize that through everything, Hope truly does spring eternal, and God’s Daylight does shine through in rainy seasons. When I focus on His Daylight, I experience a sun shower.

I was reminded of all this from listening to one song!!!! Messages in some songs are very powerful and positive depending on what you’re facing in life. But I’m not saying anything profound-you know this.  What I want to know is what song reminds you of the daylight in your life? Go ahead and comment below.

The Multitude of My Thoughts-Part I

Picture
Eight years ago, a prayer left my heart...”Dear Lord, I need your guidance. I want to start writing music...music with my own sound...Marcina’s genre...music in Your Truth and #love. Material that resonates in the souls of men.” Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic. #Realtalk, it was more like this:
“Uh Lawd, you know I’m trynna take my art to anotha’ level...will you please help a sista out?! I need some vision, some direction! I want to stop being scary and unsure of my gift, and pursue my passion, all while being mindful to show others who You are in my life. I want to make music with the true #Message.” Have you prayed to God like this before? You know you have!
Well today, I am #thankful and #proud to say that God is continually answering this #prayer. In November 2015, I will be going into the studio to complete my first solo music project: #TheMultitudeofMyThoughts-Part I
You may ask how the title was originated. For those who know me, and see my daily #Facebook postings, I love and believe the #Bible as the #WordofGod. I’m always posting verses that speak to me. One daylast year, I was reading a devotional entitled #ParentingwithWisdom on my #BibleApp (Side note: it’s funny how when reading this #devotion, all of the parenting advice has focused on getting my own self together, vs. getting my children together. That’s just how the #HolySpirit does it for me. Jesus puts it best, “Pluck the mote out of your own eye...[fool]!”) I digress. Fool wasn’t in that verse LOL. That’s just how I heard #Jesus say it...#SoAnyways, I was reading my devotional, and the key text was from #Psalm 94:18-19. I remember being “in my feelings,” a bit that day (which occurs from time to time), and when I read the text, I said “#yesLord.” Then, I #exhaled. I posted the text on my desk at work to etch it into my brain! Two simple, yet powerful lines:
18 When I said, My foot slippeth; thy #mercy, O Lord, held me up.
19 In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
These #biblical #musiclyrics have summed up where I was that day, and the many emotions I experience on a daily basis as a #wife, #mother, #friend, #sister, #daughter, #manager, #entrepreneur...every aspect of my life! Most of the time, I feel like my foot is slipping, and I’m about to fall off the cliff, stumble, whatever. But then #Godsmercy comes into play...then I am reminded of His comforts and #benefits! My soul feels delighted, and I can smile. So, I “#breatheandstop,”as my man #QTip puts it, and “give [God all I got]”. And though I was not aware of it while writing my songs, these verses actually give context of the pieces you will hear on this CD project such as Cliché and Much Fruit, plus some additional material. So, I invite you all to join me on the journey to #TheMultitudeofMyThoughts- #PartI. I #appreciate your #love, #prayers, #support, #thoughts, #ears, and #financialcontributions towards the completion of project. #Pleaseshare and #staytuned
Blessings,
